Hiking and Diving in Statia

Author: Dan- Today started early with anticipation as we ate muffins in the shadow of a dormant volcano called "The Quill". Within an hour we were hiking full speed for the summit, passing interesting wildlife such as snakes and crabs. After reaching the crater rim of the volcano, a few intrepid souls continued on to the summit and a panoramic viewpoint while others headed into town in search of Chinese food and gigabytes. At 1300 all were back aboard preparing for the wreck dive of The Charlie Brown, an old Atandt cable laying ship sunk off Statia as an artificial reef. The dive proved extraordinary and was the culmination of the Advanced Open Water course, an excellent achievement for our divers. The day finished with an Oceanography class and a tired crew laying down for a few winks before tomorrow's passage to Saba.
